Gastown is a designated Canadian National Historic Site and Vancouver's first downtown core; it was named after "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a steamboat captain and owner of the area's first saloon. It became the center of the lumber and port industry and was once the western terminus of the cross-country Canadian Pacific Railway. As a result, the City of Vancouver was incorporated around this area in 1886. However, the area declined during the Great Depression before being designated a historic district in the 1960s. Today, Gastown is a mix of tourist shops, art galleries, restaurants and nightclubs. The photo above was taken adjacent to the Gastown Steam Clock, the most prominent landmark in the district.

Simon Fraser University (SFU) is the second largest university in British Columbia. It is nicknamed "the Peak" due to its main campus' peculiar location as the sole occupant atop Burnaby Mountain; officially, the university was named after Simon Fraser, an important fur trader and explorer in the Pacific Northwest region. SFU's most famous alumnus is Terry Fox, who attempted to run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research and one of the most important icons in Canadian history (in 2 surveys about Canada's greatest heroes, he finished in 1st and 2nd place respectively); today, there is a Terry Fox Run fundraiser across Canada every September. SFU is also consistently ranked in the top 5 list of Canada's best comprehensive universities.
